On the last night before we headed for home from an 18 day
motorcycle trip, we stopped at the Shoe for a late lunch. when
we found out that there was live music that night we quickly
found a room and came back for dinner. Now my heart aches for a
beer and a basket of fish and chips everytime I hear a fiddle!
The absolute highlight of our trip.

Had an awesome time at the pub in August. Stopped in for my
son Easton's 8th's birthday. He asked if he could play his
fiddle. Kimberley Fraser was kind enough to help him tune it
before he played. Was even going to let him play a few songs in
her set. He just one to play his one tune. This made his day and
trip to Cape Breton over the top. He'll always remember his
first performance of hopefully many at the Red Shoe Pub. He was
hoping to see "the girls" as he calls them. Maybe next year.

Jordan Rankin is doing. Great job man! I shall always remember
you kindly for your kindnesses to me. You know, "little things

As a child I lived in Mabou for a little while.I remember
having to stand in a little shed in the winter at the bottom of
our lane waiting for the school bus. I also remember going to a
hall. White with Red trim then for some occasion. My time there
was not very long. I have lived also in Orangedale. On the hill
above the tracks in a green and white house with a the Hall
family. I remember the general store at the bottom of the hill.
I spent many a day on that bridge fishing, skating in the winter.
Going to school and one of my good friends I have not seen in
many many years I did not get to meet although I remembered her
house and paid a visit. She was not home. )Shelly McKay)although
I did visit Mabou and Orangedale a few years back.. Seemed as
though I was stepping back in time. Now I live here in Toronto
and as I sit here and watch the Rankins on a CTV special I had
to stop by to say thanks for the wonderful songs and memories:

Hi! I'm 13 years old and ever since my parents spilt up in 2005 my mom has been taking myself and my two sisters to cape brenton almost every summer. We've stayed in Mabou, Inverness and Pleasent Bay and everytime we go we eat supper at the red shoe pub every night. I'd never heard of the Rankin Family before and after the first visit there I began to love Celtic Music. We bought a CD and now for every second we are in Cape Brenton that CD must be played. It's a family Tradition. :D.
The Red Shoe Pub is like our home away from home. It's not just the food we enjoy there it is the atmosphere. One night this year we had eaten supper at the rusty anchor but we decided to sit and have a cup of tea at the Shoe just to sit there and enjoy the music and the pub itself. Thanks for everything, the Red Shoe pub is one of my favourite places ever. Thanks!! P.S I've met Heather Rankin Twice. Teehee.

We toured the Cabot Trail and then stopped in Mabou for lunch
at the Red Shoe Pub. My husband and I had the Mabou Seafood
Chowder, it was awesome, as was the service. Loved looking at
all the pictures of Mabou and the Rankin Family.

My mother was a Hart that raised porcupines near Mary's Hill.
She lived behind the original "shoe" with Skippy Mongairge. My
brothers and I are planning a trip to Mabou in 2010. We plan to
take in as much of the island as we can. A drive along Jonerdale

MessageAfter finishing the unbelievable Cabot Trail we stopped at our planned supper destination of THE RED SHOE PUB and what a great way to end our day with a delicious supper and enjoy 2 hours of music by the Beaton sisters. It was a perfect end to a perfect day. Our 16 yr old son who was with us as well as his friend also had a great time(our son also plays the fiddle and has been since he was six) I'm hoping he will be inspired to practice a little more. Hated to leave that night. Next summer when we come back we will definitely stop in again for more than one night....we are telling everyone of your great establishment..great service great food great music....It must be fun to live amongst all that wonderful music...We are East Coast wannabes for sure..must have been in our past lives!!!!!!!!Keep up the great work..

MessageWhile the music was great, the food was hit & miss. The Red Shoe Panini was bland, as was the Burger. Under-seasoned. The wings were soggy and not spiced properly. The mixed greens, however, were very fresh - the buttermilk dressing was great! The Mac-n-cheese was very satisfying. Everything considered, the Red Shoe was a pleasant experience!

MessageI was unappreciative of the heritage that is Nova Scotia. I met my wife online, She in Halifax, I in Ottawa. My first visit to see her we went camping in Cape Breton- she introduced me to muscles and lobster. My unawareness of the beauty of Nova Scotia and particularly Cape Breton was, is and will ever be....NO MORE. A particular bonus for me has been the discovery that the Rankins are from Cape Breton. My wife and I are visiting New Foundland (Her home) by way of Halifax and hopefully will have time to visite The Red Shoe. Regardless of whether or not we have time this visit, with my retirement(in three years time) we will be relocating to Nova Scotia. At that time you can be darn sure we will make and nurture an aquaitance with The Red Shoe

MessageI stumbled upon this site purely by chance. I spent two wonderful holidays in Cape Breton in 1988 and 1989. I am a guitar player and I have played Irish traditional music since the late 70s. I was lucky enough to meet and play with some very fine musicians in Cape Breton when I was over and I hope one day to return.

MessageI have been a Rankin Family Fan for a Loong time. I was lucky enough to see you once again in concert in Hamilton and I have to say I was totally blown away by Molly's performance. She has an amazing voice, her recorded version of Sunset is nothing compared to her live performance. It really took my breath away. If you ever offer an unplugged version of that song, I will be the first to buy it. She has a great career ahead of her. Best of Luck.

MessageHi,
We really enjoyed your concert last Monday night at the Centre in the Square in Kitchener. I 've been belting out your tunes in my car for years. It was a real treasure to hear your voices live again. We were there many years ago when you all sang with such live energy. I loved the way you were all dressed like regular people like us. It made me think that the girls would be people I would meet at a shower or at a local pub. It was a great show and we were singing all the way home. Thanks for all your efforts as I know it must be hard to be on the road when you have families at home. Bye for now.

MessageHi! I learned of this pub the other night at the Rankin Family Reunion Tour here in Vancouver. The people sitting next to me mentioned it so I had to find out more. If I get to that side of the country, I look forward to a visit for sure! As for the concert...wow! I never had the pleasure of seeing the Family perform live and I am thrilled I finally had the chance! What a wonderful show. :-) Thanks for the reunion tour and for providing me the pleasure of witnessing something I never thought I would! Good luck with the rest of the tour!
